The popularity of pumpkin pie comes straight from the New England colonist interpretation of cooking lessons from the natives. Resourceful as they were, they used the pumpkin shell for a pie baking dish by filling it with milk, eggs, honey and spices. After cleverly cooking it on top of the fire coals they had a pie befitting a Plymouth Rock pot-luck dinner.
