Boy did we have fun decorating these
cupcakes for this tip section. Decorated cupcakes are the new cookies when it
comes to special treats these days! The ideal dessert
they are fun to
make, look beautiful on the table and need no plates or utensils to
enjoy.
Use your imagination and have fun with your own decorations. We
used our
Barefoot Contessa Cupcake Mixes to make these beautiful
cupcakes. Each box comes with its own frosting mix that worked very well for
the decoration ideas we used. Your favorite cupcake recipe and a classic
frosting recipe from any cookbook will also work just as well with any style of
decorating. Piping bags are available in supermarkets or craft stores and are a
handy tool for these holiday treats. Kids love using them and all in all they
are neater and easier to handle than spreaders.
One simple idea that
worked very well for us was using red and green gum drops as decorations. We
rolled them with a standard rolling pin using regular sugar to prevent too much
stickiness. The pieces can then be easily cut into almost any shape with a pair
of kitchen shears. Our poinsettia cupcakes and the holly leaves were made using
this method. Using layers of red "leaves" the poinsettia came to life with a
few candied sunflower seeds in the center. The "bow" cupcake was made using
white and red gumdrops. We rolled and cut the
gum drop into strips and then used frosting
to hold them together in the center. We finished these cupcakes off with a few
sparkling dragees.
To make the peppermint pin wheel, Santa and the
pretty wreath cupcakes we first coated the top of the cupcake with a generous
amount of plain white frosting. We piped on the decorations using the same
frosting dyed with food coloring and used licorice and tiny red dot candies to
finish off Santa's face and the wreaths. Santa's hat is more rolled gum drop
candies.
So, round up gumdrops and peppermints, green, red and white
frosting and have a cupcake decorating party and just have fun! |
